West Highland Way and Ardess Hidden History Trail

From Sallochy Bay Car Park, walk along the West Highland Way to Ardess Lodge National Trust Scotland Ranger Centre. There follow the waymarked trail, then join and descend the Ptarmigan Ridge path and return to the car park along the West Highland Way.

Terrain: Short section on tarmac, undulating paths and tracks and short, fairly steep, sections on trail.

Distance: 12 km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent 305m to max. ht. 90m.

Start point: Sallochy Bay Car Park £3 parking charge.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 25 miles / 45 mins.

It is emphasised that ‘A’ grade walks are strenuous and should only be attempted by those with high standards of fitness and stamina and who are also properly equipped and clothed for the conditions.

Leaders will quite properly turn away those who do not meet these standards as they could create difficulties or danger for other members of the group.

Ben Vane (Callander)

From the car park, follow good track north to Glen Kinglas Reservoir and ascend south ridge over Creag na h-Airighe to summit. Return by same route, or south west down grassy slopes to the Allt Gleann nam Meann track and thence back to the dam and Brig o’ Turk.

Terrain: Good tracks at low level and around reservoir. Mainly grassy slopes on the hill.

Distance: 15 km, duration 7 hrs, total ascent 935m to max. ht 821m.

Start point: Brig o’ Turk car park.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 40 miles / 60 mins.

Glen Shira

Follow the tarmac road by the River Shira part way up the glen. Cross the river by the bridge and follow the track to Drimlee. Return by the same track to the bridge. Then take a rough track back to the start. Mainly flat.

Terrain: Tarmac road and stoney muddy track.

Distance: 15 km, duration 5 hrs, total ascent 210m to max. ht 80m.

Start point: Minor road off A83 leading to small cemetery at head of Loch Shira.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 30 miles / 50 mins.

From Killiecrankie a west approach to the hill south to Loch Choire to pick up path back.

Terrain: Path open hill path on the way back.

Distance: 8 km, duration 5 - 6 hrs, total ascent 841m to max. ht. 841m.

Start point: Killiecrankie Visitor Centre.
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 95 miles / 2 hrs.

Binnein Beag

From Kinlochleven follow good track and stalkers’ paths round the south east flank of Sgòr Eilde Beag; continue generally north and descend to cross the feeders of the Allt Coire a’ Bhinnein and climb to the Binnein Mòr/Beag bealach. Keeping to the east side of the lochan, ascend the steep slopes to the summit of Binnein Beag. Return by outward route.

Terrain: Generally good tracks and hill paths, but substantially eroded in places with loose scree on final ascent of Binnein Beag.

Distance: 18 km, duration 8 - 9 hrs, total ascent 1200m to max ht. 943m.

Start point: Car park adjacent to St. Paul’s Church, Kinlochleven. (signed – ‘Grey Mare’s Tail’ from main road).
Distance / Time from Helensburgh: 75 miles /1 hr 45 min.
