Alan's 100th Walk as Leader

A significant event took place this year when our esteemed leader Alan led his 100th walk for the group. He was joined for the walk with a co-leader, Trish, who was leading her 90th walk for the group. Only another ten to go, Trish.

The walk chosen by Alan and Trish for their joint celebration was “Beinn Ghlas – A Munro in the Lawers Range”. The date selected was 29th June and we were all delighted to be blessed with excellent weather.

Alan was welcomed to the summit of Beinn Ghlas through an arch of crossed walking poles.

At the summit Trish presented him with a cake, iced to show an image of himself and Trish.

After lunch, the cake was cut and distributed to the group. Some other walkers, who were just passing by as they headed to Ben Lawers, were also invited to partake in the celebrations and offered cake. After stuffing themselves with cake thirteen of our group decided that they had enough sugar boost to climb Ben Lawers before returning to their cars. Five of the group including Alan and Trish had more sense and relaxed in the sunshine on Beinn Ghlas before returning to the car park.

To conclude the day’s events Trish met most of the group at The Killin Hotel where we enjoyed a pleasant view of the River Dochart.

Our archivist has a record that the first walk Alan led was Butterbridge to Ben Dubh/Ben Vane and back via Abyssinia on 21st May 2000. It is interesting to note that Alan’s fifth walk should have been to Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers, on 17th June 2001, but it had to be cancelled due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Ever resourceful, Alan led an alternative the walk in Glen Coe instead.

Trish’s first walk as a leader was 10th February 2002 when she led a walk taking in the Carron Valley Reservoir, Earl's Hill and Hart Hill.
