Starting from the Inveruglas Visitor Centre car park, the route follows the access road to the Loch Sloy dam. After a damp morning, the rain eased as we set off — and a spectacular rainbow appeared, setting the tone for the day.
As we headed uphill, we took a rough path which avoided a corner of the road.
Ahead, Ben Vane dominates the skyline, its rough pyramid of rock and grass providing an impressive focal point. We shall climb it next time.
About a kilometre before the dam, the route leaves the tarmac and climbs steeply on a stone‑pitched path. The ascent is relentless, but it quickly rewards you with sweeping views of Ben Vane and the Loch Sloy Dam below — a perfect excuse to pause and take it in.
The path crosses the gentle coire of Lag Dubh before turning north and climbing steeply to Ben Vorlich’s western flank. The effort is rewarded with superb views back over Loch Lomond and its surrounding hills.
Any hope of an easy stroll disappeared at this point, as we switched into human four-wheel-drive mode and started picking our way up the increasingly rocky slope.
Woohoo, we’d finally made it to the triangulation point, only to discover that it wasn’t the true summit!
The triangulation point may steal the limelight, but Ben Vorlich’s true summit lies about 200 m further along the ridge at a cairn perched on a rocky crag. Reaching the highest point of the day, we marked the moment with a group summit photo. |
